Comment by Shelley Muzio on May 4, 2012 at 3:53pm The advice we received from one of the students at our Campus Tour was to spend extra money on a good bike lock, and for the bike, just get a used bike that gets you around campus, less likely to be stolen that way.
Comment by Cheryl on May 4, 2012 at 3:29pm My son tried renting from the ASU bookstore. It was a mess! He got the book before leaving for school, then found out he could skip the class (English 101). He returned the book before school started, as directed. At the end of the fall semester he got a note saying he needed to return the book. After much frustration and many trips to the bookstore, along with calls from home, it turns out that my son DID turn in his book. I was told by the manager that my son's return wasn't handled correctly, even though he did everything as directed. Maybe others have been fine renting, but we're done. If you buy a book and sell it back it ends up being about the same as the rental price.
About the books...Every class is different - the professors do the choosing. Sometimes it's a new class - hence no used books. What's really bad is when they insist that you get the new, updated edition, only to find out they only changed a few items! My guess is that every semester, more & more will be available as e-books.

Comment by Shelly McIntosh on May 4, 2012 at 2:15pm What about renting? Did he rent from the ASU bookstore? What went wrong?

Comment by Cheryl on May 4, 2012 at 12:54pm My son got as many used books as possible but that didn't work out for most of his engineering classes. He tried renting a book too but that was a bad experience and he won't be renting any more.
