Message on Behalf of the Dean

Dear Barrett Students,

Thank you for the concern several of you have shown regarding recent internet postings.

What is true and what is most important for you to know is that the faculty and staff members of Barrett – and, indeed, the entire ASU administration, faculty, and staff – take all concerns related to the success, safety, and well-being of our students seriously. As you all know, at the honors college our only aim is, always has been, and always will be the safety and support of Barrett students.  As you can understand, it is inappropriate to discuss the details of any particular situation that does not involve you directly, including what actions have been taken when individuals (faculty, staff or students) are determined to have fallen short of the expectations and professional standards we have in our policies. But I assure you that the university’s practice has been and continues to be that any concern is investigated, and that appropriate actions are taken, in order to promote the success, safety, and well-being of all students in Barrett and at ASU.

We are going to sponsor a panel discussion at Barrett to make sure you and your fellow students are fully aware of what steps need to be taken so that you can help identify concerns and get those concerns addressed in a professional and timely manner. This will be within the next week to ten days, and we will notify each of you of the specific date, time and place in a letter like this one.  Until then, if there are particular concerns you have right now, please immediately contact one of the following individuals for a discussion:

Kamala Green, Office of Equity and Inclusion

Ron Hicks, Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities

Kaylen Cons, Office of Student Advocacy and Assistance

Hey  folks! We just posted a brief blurb on this on the front page, but I wanted to make sure you were all aware of the My ASU Guest Access portal that will be going live on April 7th. This is one of those projects we've been working on to enhance the way you interact with your student and ASU.

This feature allows your student to grant you viewing access to their My ASU accounts -- minus any concerns of FERPA violations. Your student can grant access to as many guests as they like, can change access at any time, and can grant either partial or full access to their information. This is going to be a game-changer when it comes to your ability to help your students out, so be sure to check out our ASU News article here for more information, then chat with your student about this exciting new option!

Hello All. As I expected, I received some great feedback from ASU personnel regarding the closure of the ASU Parent forums. Please note that this decision was not made lightly, and ASU has many great things in store that will allow them (and us) to communicate effectively and efficiently. There are so many social media tools out there and using our new FB group page is one way to still keep us connected as Barrett families taking this ASU journey together.

I'm glad a little more time will be available so we can get the word out about Facebook. Being able to get advice from other parents has been so worthwhile.

Thank you Zach for taking more time for the transition. The extra time is very appreciated!

I've really enjoyed this site.  It's unfortunate that ASU will no longer support something that so many parents have found to be a good resource.

@Nicole and Jean:  I agree, these site has been so very helpful to me as the out-of-state parent of a freshman. Thanks to Zachary and all the parents who've participated.

Thank you Zachary as the Out of State and Barrett Parents groups have been a Godsend.

Thank you Zachary - that will give us more time to get people over to the FB groups also!

Hello ASU Parents members,

Thank you for your input regarding the impending closure of the Parent-to-Parent discussion groups. The ASU Parent and Family Resources portal is an excellent resource. Your conversations and concerns voiced over the past weekend are helpful as we determine future content and interactive dynamics for the new portal. We also recognize your concerns that closing these groups before interactive features of the new site are fully developed could be a disservice to you at this critical time as you are making plans for your students regarding the upcoming school year.

To this end, we will still be transitioning to the new site at a slower pace. The Class of 2017, Out-Of-State, and Barrett Parents groups will remain open through April. All other groups, however, will continue to be closed over the next several days.

Thank you for your continued investment and support of the ASU parent and family community.

Best Regards,
